Deve Gowda spoils son's political future

Karnataka’s politics is waiting to explode next month. The agreed timeframe to transfer the Chief Ministership to BJP is nearing for Janata Dal (S). However plans are hatched on war footing to ensure the continuance of H.D. Kumaraswamy in the driver’s seat for the next half of the state assembly. Breaking all the myths, the Chief Minister for the first time did a commendable job for the past 2 years. He showcased his administrative abilities and political acumen. In every angle he worked as a practical politician willing to strike deal with anyone for the development. Disproving critics and rumour mongers, Kumaraswamy worked objectively for the growth of all sections. When he started becoming popular and acceptable his father, Deve Gowda is trying to misguide him by forcing advises.

Deve Gowda disowned his son for breaking the coalition with Congress and joining hands with “communal BJP” two years back. He was chest beating around the country saying that he is not in agreement with the methods of H.D. Kumaraswamy and totally condemned the government formation with the support of BJP. He evoked secular credentials of his party and advised his followers to keep away from the right wing politics. On the other hand, Kumaraswamy followed a practical approach. Knowing fully well that no party in the country can communalise entirely and win votes, he agreed to strike a deal with BJP.

According to the deal, Kumaraswamy will be the chief minister for the first two years and then the BJP nominee will take over for the last half of the assembly. Some of Kumaraswamy’s cabinet colleagues and party leaders provoked by Deve Gowda are making all the dirty moves to stop the transfer of power. Jockeying with the secular image they wanted to iron out an agreement with the Congress and make sure the continuance of Kumaraswamy for the rest of the assembly term.

If the plans of Deve Gowda engineered revolt is worked out, the real loser will be his son. After getting discredited by the public, Deve Gowda wants some political space. He wants to use the power transfer occasion to get back his clout. On three important grounds his forced interference should be drubbed by Kumaraswamy

1. Gowda’s popularity is on the historical downslide
2. BJP is better for JD(S) to handle than the ambitious Congress
3. Kumaraswamy has the solid potential to grow politically with the BJP

The old horse Gowda has the habit of double speak. Initially he disowned his son for going with BJP. Very soon due to the rising public response to Kumaraswamy’s chief minsitership, Gowda changed his stunts. Without any invitation Gowda started giving advises for Kumaraswamy’s governance. Although the son delivered administratively better than his father, Kumaraswamy did not deny his advises. Today the unsolicited suggestions are turning into misguidance.

Without any doubt even in the minds of opposition parties, Kumaraswamy can score better electorally in the absence of his father’s interferences. It is high time for the promising young chief minister of Karnataka to call shots. Without breaking the coalition agreement he should transfer power to BJP and continue the alliance. Only this action can help him to grow politically. Otherwise he will be ruined by the petty actions and reactions of Deve Gowda.
